In response to a call for reduction in waste sent to landfill and increased recycling, BSI today launches its new PAS 2020 Direct Marketing Environmental Performance assessment and certification scheme. The scheme is designed to help organisations involved in marketing take a more sustainable approach to their activities and reduce the amount of paper that ends up in landfill.

A recent poll from BSI questioned companies on their views towards certification. It found that almost a third of companies believe that purchasing a standard is enough and that certification is unnecessary. In response, BSI is hosting a free event for Oxford-based businesses to help them better understand the benefits of certification, on 11 November at the Kassam Stadium, in Oxford.

In a bid to reduce the environmental impact of its activities and drive out inefficiencies, City Services, the operational directorate of Cambridge City Council has achieved and continues to maintain an impressive trio of certifications to three key management system standards: ISO 14001 (environmental management), ISO 9001 (quality management) and BS OHSAS 18001 (occupational health and safety management).

Norfolk County Council's Planning and Transportation Partnership strives to put environmental performance at the top of its agenda. The department successfully achieved certification to ISO 14001 in 2003. The scope of this certification covers the following areas: environmental and waste management, strategic land use, transport planning, minerals and waste planning, passenger transport and highways services.

Suffolk County Council has a history of putting environmental performance at the top of its agenda. Having achieved certification to the environmental management system, ISO 14001, in 2002 for its environment and transport division, the decision was then made to roll out the system across the whole organisation, resulting in corporate certification in December 2005.

In 2007 the chief executive of Johnson Matthey, a worldwide precious metals and advanced materials company, challenged the company to 'halve the amount of raw materials used and remove waste while doubling profitability'. This new sustainability initiative was a ten year goal linked to the forthcoming 200th anniversary of the company in 2017.

BSI Learning has now introduced eLearning modules into its portfolio as a complementary learning aid. These will work together alongside existing courses to form part of a blended offering to its customers. Research has shown that 57 per cent of organisations currently use eLearning with an additional 27 per cent planning to implement it within the next 12 months1. This reflects the change in learning technologies and the rise in organisations embracing them in order to reap the benefits they have to offer.

It is responsible for the provision of all local authority services delivered through eight services for 178,000 people. Renfrewshire is one of the first local authorities in Scotland to achieve the recognised health and safety management standard, BS OHSAS 18001.

Established in 2001, as a joint venture partnership, Liverpool Direct Limited (LDL) is the largest public and private partnership of its kind in the UK. BT owns 80.1% of the company and Liverpool City Council owns 19.9%. As well as processing all revenue and council tax collections and benefit payments for Liverpool City Council, the company operates a contact centre, which provides 24/7 access to information about the city for residents, businesses and tourists. HR, payroll and other public access facilities complete the portfolio of services LDL provides for Liverpool City Council.

FMG Support is the UK’s largest independent fleet performance improvement company and has been operating since 1986. Its key service areas are fleet incident management and roadside repair and recovery management. FMG Support has a UK-wide network of supply partners and national customers including Royal Mail, Carlsberg and the Highways Agency. The company employs around 450 people and has an annual turnover of over £80m. In March 2008, the FMG Support Board secured a multi million pound investment from private equity firm Aberdeen Asset Management to fund further market growth and innovation.

Halliwells is a commercial law firm, with around 1,000 staff across offices in Manchester, Liverpool, London and Sheffield. IS O 20000 is the internationally recognised standard for IT service management (ITS M). It lays out an integrated framework for delivering and managing IT services to the customer and provides opportunities for better management control, greater effectiveness and general management improvement within an organisation. Halliwells decided to seek certification to IS O 20000 in order to catalyse changes within the business that would add value.

The Health and Safety Executive identifies that 2.2 million people work in Britain’s construction industry, making it the country’s biggest industry. It is also one of the most dangerous. In the last 25 years, over 2,800 people have died from injuries they received as a result of construction work. Many more have been injured or made ill.
